Electronic Data Interchange or EDI as it is called by industry professionals, has been used for many years to maintain data files for business to business transactions as well as to keep records of such transactions for the individual companies themselves using methods such as barcode scanning that can trace when and where a particular good came from, and from whom and at what value.
The advent of the World Wide Web did not immediately affect the industry, but over the past several years, Web based EDI has become extremely popular, especially among larger corporations that outsource their Web EDI for cost-effectiveness.
The difference between internet EDI and other forms of EDI is not unlike the difference between e-mail and “snail mail.” They both accomplish a very similar task, but at a much faster rate, thus generating quicker results, higher turnaround and overall higher efficiency for business to business transactions.
